1v1 Off-Ball Screens: Create and Read

Small-Sided 8 min 4+ players

1v1 scoring game with two offensive support players who pass and set off-ball screens. The scorer plays with zero dribbles and uses screens, fakes, and re-screen actions to create an advantage.

Instructions

  1. Set 1 offensive player, 1 defender, and 2 offensive support players in the playing area
  2. Let the support players start in coach-selected spots, or let them choose their spacing for more freedom
  3. The offensive player passes to either support player
  4. The offensive player plays to score with zero dribbles
  5. The 2 support players help the scorer by setting screens, including back screens, flare screens, and pin-downs
  6. Score normal points for made baskets: 2s and 3s
  7. Award 1 extra point for an assist and 1 extra point for a screen assist

Coaching Points

  • Get the defender into the screen
  • Use fakes before using the screen
  • Re-trigger the action if no advantage is created on the catch
  • Adjust the screening angle based on the defender’s position

Variations

  • Adjust player spacing and starting positions
  • Modify the playing area, such as using only one side
  • Add a secondary defender near the rim
